A widespread belief concerning ghosts is that they were composed of a misty, airy, or subtle material. Anthropologists speculate that this may also stem from early beliefs that ghosts were the person within the person, most noticeable in ancient cultures as a person's breath, which upon exhaling in colder climates appears visibly as a white mist. In the Bible, God is depicted as animating Adam with a breath.![]() Gradient Ghosts I, 2008 Installation view, ART Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico 3 LED lightboxes with Duratrans prints, paint on 4' x 10' wood panels sizes variable ![]() Gradient Ghosts I, detail view, 2008 Our project space was located at El Museo Cultural, an old warehouse that locals say is haunted and has a history of unexplained sightings. During the first night of installation we had the entire building to ourselves and were working well past midnight. All of a sudden we heard metal clanking and breaking glass, then we saw shadows of two figures in a hallway across from us. We thought the place was being robbed and called the police. The police showed up quickly and did a complete walk-thru, they found broken glass but nothing conclusive. ![]() Gradient Ghosts I, installation view, lighting variation, 2008 ![]() Gradient Ghosts I, Duratrans detail view, 2008 ![]() Gradient Ghosts I, Duratrans detail view, 2008 ![]() Gradient Ghosts I, Duratrans detail view, 2008 |
